Akershus
Fortress - The most important Norwegian monument
was built in Oslo, and comes in the form of Akershus
Castle. It was built in the 1300s, and it overlooks
a stunning harbour. This opulent fortress, which is
now used for many state occasions, contains dungeons,
plush upper floors with banquet halls and staterooms,
and the chapel used for royal events.
Visitors to Oslo are highly recommended to visit
this architecturally and culturally fascinating place.
The bold design looms over the harbour like a warden
– as powerful and dominating as the Vikings
that once inhabited this ancient country.
Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of the
fortress is the chapel, which holds the crypts of
King Haakon VII and King Olav V.
Guided tours are available, but you must book quickly,
as this is a very popular tourist destination.
The Akershus Fortress will take
a full day (or more) for travellers to explore properly.
Its rich and diverse history makes this the perfect
destination for those who are looking to find out
more about the real Oslo, and Norway.
